You all want to laugh... but it sounds elitist.

For $300 its a very low entry barrier to sticker making, t-shirt making or personalised items. for those you can't afford a small Graphtec or similar, and want to go off and do something on the side. why not.

This is the same as someone who own a Colorado sees someone buy a Roland bn20. Compared, it's a toy. but to someone who's starting out, it's the best thing they can afford..

Aren't these things locked to their software and require a subscription for basic functionality?
Plus, for less than $300, you can pick up some jank from us cutter that is not locked in a sandbox, but I reckon you still need to get something like corel to drive it.

You pretty much just answered your own question. The Cricut has their own software that will aid you though out the whole process. sure it's simple and if you want more there's a subscription.
If you pick up a cheap vinyl cutter. Now you need software, the plugins etc. what do you choose? Adobe? Subscription, Corel? $500. (more than the cutter). say your friend got you the software free no questions asked. now you have no idea and no guidance on how any of it works. youtube, forum. etc....
Do you see where im going with this?

Sure everyone here knows how to use a vinyl cutter. but im sure hands down when everyone started, it was a lot of messing about getting it to work. ''\

$300, a basic cutter and you'll be making stickers from your phone, ipad, laptop. easily. i dont see the problem here.

When I started, a few dollars for a can of paint and a decent brush and I lettered a whole lot of trucks. I was lucky, I hadda lotta art training and background since I was in 4th grade.

There's no problem here. It's just a shame that an industry that used to take good eye/hand coordination and some talent has dumbed down to this level. Yep, that's the level of expertise I want in someone making the pylon sign at the mall down the road.

Hey - you have to look at with a positive attitude! My sister has one and she no longer asks me to make scrapbook stickers. I don't get anyone asking me for flour and sugar container decals. If I DO get any of these requests I tell them to ask their friends if they have a Cricket!

Man who touches printers inappropriately.
While the cricut stuff is a crazy racket and their materials and consumables are obscene, still nothing compared to the hustle moms selling $20K DTF setups to people. Gotten so many printers for almost nothing as a result of that racket.
