Illustrator CS (11) Font Issues

I asked this in another thread inappropriately so I'm reposting it here hoping for some hints to the solution...Thanks!

I'm having some problems with fonts in Illustrator CS (v11):

1) There are certain installed fonts that cannot be accessed through the Character Palette but can be accessed only through the Font Menu bar. One example is A&S Marquee Extended, in the Character Palette it shows 2 copies of A&S Marquee and when each one is selected they both access A&S Marquee only but in the Font Menu it shows the regular version A&S Marquee and the A&S Marquee Ext and accesses each correctly.

2) There are certain fonts which Illustrator cannot access at all. One example is Arial, which I have about 10 versions installed, bold, light, italic, etc. but Illustrator will only access Arial Black and Arial Narrow, even though the others are installed and every other program accesses them just fine.

3) When you install additional fonts they sometimes display in a separate list on the bottom of the main list of fonts in the Character Palette and sometimes they are added in alphabetical order on the main list. I would think that they would all go to the regular alphabetical order.

Does anyone have any idea how to cure any of these little annoyances? Someone suggested something about "missing glyph protection" in the type preferences but I cannot find the that. Is that only for CS4? There was also something said about deleting another preference file and then re-creating it, does anyone have any suggestions of that type that might work?

I have the same issue as your #1, but I hadn't tried accessing it the other way, thanks for that!

I am most interested to see what answers there are to your questions.

Some possibilities...

You have too many fonts installed. You have multiple versions of the same font (otf, ttf and/or ps). Maybe they are affecting one another

The font at the bottom of the list... I see that when I download free fonts. Some are not made well and maybe there is some internal font creation problems going on. Not all free fonts are high quality and the creators don't know what they are doing

Try removing the Ai preferences file and restarting. Google it and it will tell you where on the HD it is located

Your answers have prompted me to look further and I have found some good information at Adobe/Support/Knowledge Base...I don't know why I didn't think to do that in the first place. Anyway here are some possible solutions:

http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/328/328910.html
http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/328/328607.html
http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/113/11327720.html

I followed this procedure and have had some good success with most of, but not all, of the issues.:

Solution 10: Delete Adobefnt.lst files.
Search your system drive for "Adobefnt*.lst" to find all Adobe CoolType font list files (for example, Adobefnt05.lst, Adobefnt10.lst) . Delete all found files, and then restart the Adobe application.

I also believe that this has helped to increase the performance of my Adobe programs and may also help with some occasional program freeze issues.
