Illustrator Gradients

Wondering if there's a simple way to do a gradient that fades from a color to transparent, revealing the layers beneath in Illustrator? I can do it in Photoshop but need to do it in Illustrator. Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Yes
Draw a vector and assign a gradient.
click on one of the gradient sliders.
Directly beneath the gradient sliders is the "Opacity" setting.
Change the value from 100% to 0%.

looking at the screen capture I made, you can see that the gradient sliders are assigned black on both ends, but because the opacity setting is set to zero on the left side it creates the color to transparent effect you are looking for.

Set it to go from a color to the white and then put it on Multiply in Transparency panel.

you can also create a transparency mask...

Create a vector and assign a color.
Create another vector and assign it a black and white gradient.
Select both vectors making sure the gradient shape is on top.
Click on the transparency tab and click on the menu just to the right.
Choose "Make Transparency Mask"

I'm going to make a video for you guys tonight on this. Also, how to keep the gradients from being mucky say if you go from black to red.
