incoming web traffic question

Every few days I check my incoming web traffic. In the past several years, 90% were from web searches, signs101, tshirtforums... basically relevant websites

In the past month the traffic has spiked to nearly double my average. The first 4 are from russian websites that are totally unrelated to signmaking. Looking farther down in my top 25 there are 2 dating sites, 2 sex sites, and other oddball sites

17 of my top 25 referring sites originate from russia and other european sites. The only time I have seen links coming from non sign related sites was when I paid for google adwords over a year ago

What is going on? My number 1 and 2 web traffic this month is astanafans (dot) com and rusport (dot) eu. In previous months I got most clicks from signs101 posts

It is called web log spam. It is pretty easy to write a program to spoof the http referer header which is what you see in your logs when someone clicks through to your site. These people request pages on your site and make it appear that people have come from those URLs. In reality they are doing one of a few possible things:

1. Hoping your weblogs are public and the links will be indexed and improve their ranking
2. Trying to get YOU to click them and visit their site (your site can sometimes be topically related to theirs), once you get there they will attempt to sell you on whatever the site sells, or infect your computer with malware.
