Ink Warning changed?

The latest update to VersaWorks has a pop-up window appearing when the ink level is getting low, and I was getting that message for a little while recently with the black cartridge being low, but does the printer itself still stop and give the final “replace cartridge” message as before, or does that not happen any more in favour of the VW message?

the printer will still stop when the cart actually runs out. We've had the message about our yellow cart for 2 weeks now, I just printed about 60ft of full coverage graphics and am still on the same carts, so the pop-up warning is VERY premature.

you can turn it off in the versaworks settings if you want to.

Yes, I turned it off in VW a week or two ago, I just wanted to be darn sure that the printer will indeed stop and ask for a new cartridge, as it did before. I'd hate to run the lines dry!

The reason I ask is that today I had a really odd blue & yellow ghosting thing happen on a black-only print (100% RGB black) - and my rep said that it could be due to a low cartridge.

here's an image:

no that's a versaworks issue, I've had a few files do that to me recently, I sent the files to other shops in the area running versaworks and they all had the same issue, but shops running other rips printed the file fine.

try pulling the file into your design program and saving as a different format, that's the only thing that worked for me.

The file has since been deleted as the customer changed their mind on the wording, but I wonder if the issue is in the fact that I had applied an RGB black to the lettering as opposed to CMYK?

What was the FORMAT giving you the problem, and what FORMAT did you change it to that eliminated the problem?

Just in case I ever get this issue, thanks...

Premature indeed, ours is the same way. basically that is what we use as a point to order replacement inks.

and it does stop printing, just try to be close to the machine as the long the wait is before you load a new ink the more noticeable it is on the print where the pause was.

that ghosting is odd, none of our files are doing that 95% of them are PDF files

I used to weigh cartridges before I trusted that the "empty beep" worked. I now trust the beep, but if I plan on being far enough away to not hear the beep, I will weigh the low ones.

Empty 220's range from 6.125-6.195 grams.

all occasions recently happened with customer supplied pdf files, all were also created on a Mac. both times I pulled the files into CorelDraw and saved them as .eps files and it fixed the problem.

I've never seen that ghosting before, but I have noticed since the "insufficient ink" warnings come up that the printer itself no longer beeps. I've discovered a couple of times that one of the carts was empty and the printer itself didn't say peep.

Yikes! This is what I was worried about. Yet, I just now got an email from Steven Tu at Roland saying that "the printer will still prompt you when the ink runs out."

So did you completely drain the line(s) and accidentally introduce air into them?
