I constantly charge, charge , charge for any artwork . .This way the customer knows then that they own it, and can do whatever they want with it. The only thing I don't charge for is something like 2 or 3 copy text lines in a block font that reads "Congratulations on your new Banner" or whatever. I always send them tiny proofs@72 or a PDF with a password in order to open in AI or to even print sometimes. I run a mac so I screen shoot all my proofs really easily ... I never , ever , ever do any design or graphics work before receiving a deposit or an agreement to terms, signed. I have had a pretty good run with these ideas .. And I agree with the fact that we as an industry need to charge the customer for time on the computer, the clients need to see a value in that, and because they can't touch it or see it, They sometimes can just be unaware or uneducated.. I worked at a national franchise when I started on the table , and I always got so angry at the owner because he never charged appropriately for design time. He was missing out on some serious dough, and at the same time, the workers wage suffered because the owner did not even see the value in the design time.. needless to say, he had a huge turnover in employees.
