It looks just like Penumbra Half Serif but...

This one looks like a perfect match for Penumbra Half Serif but the letter thickness just doesn't work out. Of the ones I've found:

Penumbra Half Serif Standard Regular is the closest.

But each one is either too thin or too thick and it doesn't appear that a stroke or contour has been added. Any ideas?

Thanks for looking at it, Fred. Elan is very close also but the A is too tall and there are other subtle differences.

I'm going to take try contouring one of the thinner Penumbra's.

Penumbra MM can literally be hundreds of variations between Serif and Sans Serif as well as Light to Bold. The OpenType series of Penumbra is based on the sans, flare, half serif and serif "primaries" of the Multiple Master version.

You're exactly right! I ended up finding the architects spec's. It was Penumbra MM 450/750. After buying the font from fonts.com, I "created an instance" in Adobe Type Manager using the 450 and 750 settings which essentially created a new font that I installed.

This is the first time I've run into something like this. I definitely learned something new today!

What OS are you using? I'm still on Win XP SP3.

My understanding is Adobe Type Manager will not work under Windows Vista or Windows 7 and isn't compatible with the 64-bit version of Windows XP. You need Adobe Type Manager in order to use Multiple Master fonts. Otherwise you would need a font editing tool like FontLab that could open a Multiple Master instance and export a Type 1, TrueType or OpenType version of it.

Luckily I'm on Win XP also. I just downloaded ATM Lite(free) and it was a snap(once I knew what to do!)

I kind of liked MM's but newer versions of Windows and Mac OS broke how they used to work when first introduced. There was a slider where you could make dozens of weights of the same font. Now they are just a subset of what they could have been

One of the things I really liked about Adobe Illustrator 7 was its own built in MM instance creator. It saved having to install lots of separate instances of MM fonts into Windows or MacOS. You could install a base typeface like Nueva or Penumbra and the sliders in Illustrator would alter the face according the axis sliders available in each typeface. Some, like Kepler, even had optical weight sliders.
