JPG Properties settings

Can someone please explain to me the various settings for a JPG under the "Properties" setting? (Windows 7)

I guess I'm mainly wondering about the ability to make a JPG that I create viewable only to the recipient, or to at least make it known that the file is copyrighted, or something to that effect. Or to be more clear; that the recipient of my JPG can't just shop it around town.

I'm assuming you're talking about sending out proofs. At my last shop we had a "stamp" that had our logo, contact info, etc. on it and little boxes to fill out with the clients name, revision number, project name, as well as a little tagline that told them that this was copyrighted artwork and we owned until they had paid us in full, etc. I think that is ussually enough in most cases.

Yes, but all that can be too easily Photoshopped out by the recipient.

Even if you could lock it, they will find a way. Even if it's just a screencap.

Lo-res with watermark might be less headaches.

watermarked, with copyright jargon added, low-resolution, with a high-resolution sampling saved into a .pdf at the "smallest filesize" setting, for quick email viewing but looks like garbage if you try working on it as a production file.

if they're going to pirate my artwork, they're gonna have a heck of a time doing so. Aside from that, I rarely do design/layout work without a signed contract/down payment. Design time ain't free, use your completed projects as your selling tool, but don't work for anyone without them paying you for it!

Recently, a good customer asked for a copy of a banner we did for them earlier in the year. I knew what was happening, so I watermarked it and get a call back asking what all the gibberish was all over his picture ??

I told him, that's created automatically when we generate copies for going over the internet. It's built into our software  So, he asked me why his original didn't have that. I told him that was from our proprietary file and can only be viewed by us unless we make a special file, which we do when a job is accepted so they can see a clear proof.

He said, I don't remember ever seeing that on any of my e-mails from you before.

Right, that's because they always accompany a job. This one doesn't so it's generated with this watermark to prevent someone else from using our files.

He then said..... well I need brochures made, how is the printer going to do it with all that stuff on it.

Simple, we'll get it done for you and send the appropriate files, but it'll cost ya.

Forget it, we'll just make something else up. I don't want to pay you for something you already did. I don't get it.

Well, someone must've explained it to him, because they've been back for oodles of stuff since. :thumb:

those arent jpeg properity settings. they are security settings for files on your own machine/network.

they are not what you are looking for to do what you are describing.

also to add you can do some serious damage with those settings. If you have no clue dont play around. You could eventually remove all access to a hard drive and have to re-image a hdd drive because you decided to play with them some idiot did that once.... :iamwithstupid
