jv3 spll problem...need advice

I left for holidays yesterday and gave the printer a good cleaning. Something happened just as i was leaving and the printer was in sleep mode. I have seen this happen before . The machine started up after i turned it off for the day to do a maintenance cleaning . I would say it was off for about an hour or so.

when it ran the sleep cycle i think the wiper got stuck and the printe stayed on and flashed something about hitting the enter key. I did and it pulled the wiper back into its spot, made some noise and shut itself off.

problem solved..... anyways i kept thinking about it as i sit in tbe airport at 4am this morning. I wondered what happens if it happens again while we are closed for the week. I called my sister and asked her to go in today and check the printer. I basically told her if she sees the green on button lit to shut it down and leave. She said tbat it was on and did what i told her to do. So now i am worried that it could keep doing this all week and if no one goes in to check i could be in bjg trouble a week from now.

so i need to know if i have to get someone in daily to check it or is it ok for it to sit idle like that as i do not know if it performs any tasks in this state

From what you describe it sounds like the wiper motor is getting jammed and causing an error. Unfortunately when errors occur on JV3s it pretty much locks them up and prevents them from doing any of the automated cleanings.

My suggestion; Walk your sister through moving the carriage out, filling the Caps with fluid and then re-parking the heads (i.e. a Nozzle Wash), then have her switch the main power switch off in the back. The machine obviously won't do any of it's cleanings but at least the heads are soaking. Depending how long you are away for, have her come back and repeat the process every few days.

Try not to worry and enjoy your vacation!

I agree that is great advice
I ran out of ink once on my JV3 when my backup was defective & no replacement could be landed on my island for 4 days or something, due to the weekend, and no local suppliers... and finding out I needed it too late to order until Monday. I was worried about getting air in the lines & someone taught me that same method to bypass the auto cleaning cycle, while giving the heads their best chance to survive it

1 more question as i am away and cant remember without turning the power on and sliding the heads out manually, will the cleaning fluid stay in the caps or will it drain. I ask as the person who will do this has never touched the printer before.

caps should stay full for a nozzle wash. (assuming they fill-up in the first place)
powering-down the printer allows you to extend the nozzle-wash "soak" past the 99min max option on the printer.
if the machine is already powered completely-off, you can manually slide the carriage-out, fill the caps, and gently slide it closed to accomplish the same task w/o having to go through the menu.

also, in regards to your wiper motor error, it's definitely a build-up of ink on your wiper mechanism(s).
my money is on the trigger/switch just under the silver rail on the right (looking at the wiper from the front) being built-up with ink and not letting the machine know it is open/closed. its a black box with a metal trigger on the side of it that should "click" against a button when pressed. ink build-up inhibits this action.
the jv3 tries doing a quick wipe occasionally when it is idle, and if the wiper errors-out, the machine stops to avoid striking the heads with an "open" wiper.

cleaning solution and a soft toothbrush should clean it right up. (being careful not to bend/pull-against the small metal trigger)
