Hello
I am Sam, from Auckland, New Zealand.
I am not a professional sign-writer, i happened to have a hobby as a kid cutting stickers for my remote control cars etc with tracing paper and a hobby knife, spent many hours hand cutting stickies and transfers.

By profession i am a electronic security systems technician/consultant. I happened to install a CCTV system for a Signwriting shop in Auckland, who ended up not paying his bill to me as he went out of buisness :(, he owed me around 4500 NZD. Luckily I also Installed the Security system for the company putting him in receivership.

Customer took out all the security equipment and most of his sign/print equipment before receivers locked the doors, I ended up taking ownership of his Roland sp300 and Mimaki cg60 and pc which they were connected to for no cost ;) , I spent many many many hours learning to service the machines and fixed a lot of problems he had created on them. I intended to recoup my losses by reselling the machines...That was three years ago, I couldn't sell them as i grew to enjoy using the machines.

I have created Canvas prints for family and friends, my car signs (simple logos), tshirt transfers for my kids sports teams, custom artwork on our remote controlled race cars, Wifes happy as all her kitchen stuff is neatly labelled :). but mainly used for my security buisness signage and logos. Plus it rekindled my hobby as a kid. Possibilities with these machines are endless, everyday i think of new ideas

Ive spent many hours doing small jobs (logos, mirrors wraps etc) on friends/families cars and trucks to learn the art of application, Ive got a lot better - no more bubbles :). I use flexisign for vectors and photoshop cs6 with roland versaworks fro RIP - these are my goto software.

I have been thinking of attempting to wrap my work ute with a nice digital print. I know a bit of using photoshop and AI and have a few great plugins. I am just not sure on the design process - As the vehicle is around 5M would i create a Image size of the size of the vehicle then create the artwork (could endup a huge file) or create on a smaller scale. This would also apply to Wall Art i want to do in my 11 year olds room, I want to cover his 3x3m wall in a photo of a Cricket pitch with the stadium in the background.

Any help, links to design etc for signwriters would be appreciated.

regards
Sam

Welcome from a fellow Aucklander :)

We are based in New Lynn. Great to see more people from New Zealand on here.

For design and setup of wraps and vehicle decals, I much prefer Illustrator. Flexi seems a little clunky for my taste, but if you know what you know it's all about proper measurement and bleed to get it looking good.

All depends on the design though. Whip something up and post it here. You're bound to get a few good people critiquing your work.

Cheers,
David
