I cannot tell you how often this happens. Customer sends me artwork. I tell them that the file is too low of a resolution to recreate from. It was from a business card so I told them to scan at a higher resolution.
They sent it to me a 2nd time (sample 1 below) and insisted it was now 600 dpi. Absolutely no way, unless the image was 1/8 inch tall. So they did finally send a new file on the third try (sample 2). Much better
It is frustrating. I am not sure how many jobs I have lost when they must think I am crazy but in fact they just don't know how to operate their scanners or software
Moral - check your files before you send them off. Zoom into your art. When I trace, i always have to be zoomed in to trace unless it is incredibly crisp or simple.
Another similar mistake is when I am sent a thumbnail image rather than the original higher res artwork.
