Back in the 70's they hand painted. sometimes on sticker material, sometimes on the car itself. I've done a bit of work using his number, sig, etc and I've not seen a font in any of the artwork they've provided.
That's not to say one doesn't exist that might match that style of lettering, but I don't believe there is any sort of font that was created specifically for petty or the #43.

your right, when you work 45+ hours at your full time job then come home to start on the business work after 7pm, its hard to type when it gets dark!
