I am doing a menu board for a new detailing shop. the customer is on a limited budget (as usual) and wants a "small" menu board for the customers to read. What is the smallest letters I could use and be lagable at a distance of 8' - '10? My size chart starts at 3" letters- 100'

The threshold of legibility will depend on the letter style used and the color combination. My best guess is somewhere between .25" and .5". I'd suggest that you set a few words at 24 PT, 36 PT and 48 PT sizes and print on a sheet of paper ... then step back to 10' away and see what's legible.

If you are basing your letter height on an upper case, remember.... the lower case will be smaller and harder to read. Therefore, the lower case would need some extra 'oomph' due to all the centers that appear to close up at small distances.
