linear encoder error

while printing this morning, my copies are getting blurry and are walking of the edge of the media towards the head home position. i eventually get a linear encoder error and the printer stops. the misregistration is in the direction of the head, like it is losing it's tracking after a few prints. i have seen this before with a different operator, but don't know what/ how he corrected the problem. i know to clean the head capping encoder, but don't see a left/right to clean. Any help?

well i think i resolved the issue. the x direction encoder runs along the back wall of the JV5. cleaning both sides of that strip seems to have fixed my problem.
