Does anyone know who's 60 inch matt black wrap film is the closest to satin black or an overlam that is similar? Please help!

I was told the same by Oracal. Have you installed the 970? How is it? I mainly have experience with Avery, 3m, and Arlon.
Thanks for your input.

We just did a truck hood with this material...hood had a hood scoop and contours on each side...the material was very easy to work with...

My vote is for the Avery Matte Black from the Supreme Wrap series. I actually painted my car in Satin Black and their's is a great match to my paint. Nice deep black, good satin finish and no chalky look. If I hadn't already gone to the trouble of paint I would use it in a heartbeat.

I would say that Oracal 970RA (or non RA, they are the same finish) is the closest to satin.

Enclosed is a pic showing the difference between Oracal 970 (on bottom) vs Avery Supreme wrap vs 3M 1080, all in matte black:

Edit - had the reply open for a bit.... came back and see Haakon also gave a photo side by side. :)

I've used some of all. All are roughly the same to apply but there are differences on the brands and finish.

Oracal has almost what I'd call an eggshell finish. Not glossy at all - it's very slick smooth soft in a way - looks wicked good. It is the least matte. Oracals is also the blackest.

Avery's is fairly matte. Not quite as black but still very nice and smooth. Not chalky.

3M's is the least black - sort of odd. Nice to apply, fairly matte.

Last two are Hexis films. Regular matte - the other blackest of the bunch, fairly matte but has some blotchiness in the finish that I dont much like. Ultra matte - not the blackest but definitley the mattest (if thats a word). Looks chalky like black primer.

Photo of all side by side - not the best comparison but I happen to have samples of these all handy... Personally I think the Oracal is the nicest looking.

Thanks for the comparison Sightline, I wondered what the Hexis ultra matte looked like compared to the others.

I have an upcoming project involving wrapping a VW Transporter (eurovan to you?) in matte black, and preferably the mattest available. But it also needs to be decent to work with. What would be the best choice?

Where did you get those swatches? I need some of those to show my customers.

I got one from my Avery supplier and one from my 3M supplier :D Both of them over here in Norway, but your local supplier should be able to give you some, or at least order in from the manufacturers? The 3M 1080 was just released in europe in November last year, got an email newsletter from the supplier that it was available, picked up the phone and got them to send me a swatch booklet. The Avery one my supplier wanted to give me since "it was much better than the one I used" (Oracal 970RA series), and would save me 30% install time compared to other brand (yeah right?). I only really called them to order some Avery knifes and spare blades (I love them!) and some ink for my printer. Install time savings or not, its priced at over double the price of Oracal over here, can't see myselft going for that one. Looks nice though.

Oracal 970ra matte black FTW! this is what i use. i like the fact that it's a 4mil vinyl with the overlam built into it, i think it is better protection this way from rock chips/ surface scratches, etc...

If you're after a vinyl that's more satin than matte, consider a gloss vinyl with easy apply backing. I've wrapped my personal and business vehicles in 3M 180 with Controltac gloss black, and the cross hatch takes away the gloss to give a very unique finish that we get lots of comments about (as well as the bonus of being very quick to apply).

Here are the pics of the finished wrap using 970ra. It installed really easy and the client loved the satin finish. Thank you everyone for the info.
