Media take-up system - DIY?

I have a Roland 540i. Wondering if anyone has made an inexpensive take-up reel. I can think that I would use an empty tube and probaly tape the lead edge to it and turn the tube as it comrs off the heater. I'm looking to do this without drilling a bunch off trial and error holes in my pretty new machine.

I can get you one for $695 that is motorized and mounts to your stand without drilling holes. Feel free to call for more information!

LOL....I think spending $700 was what he wanted to avoid...hence the DIY part.

I was thinking $700 compared to the couple grand Roland would want for one was a good deal. I have seen a couple people set up their own motorized take up reel and some have gone as far to use light sensors and other gadgets to control the take up. It's definitely doable. It just depends on his skill set. $700 might be worth the time saved in my opinion especially if it is something he is going to use a lot and he wants to last.

That looks like an OEM Mimaki take-up reel system. I would assume it would be easy to apply to any printer.
