Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays?

Which do you prefer to use?

If someone says Happy Holidays is it better to do the same or go the Merry Christmas route?

Oh, and to everyone here.... Merry Christmas!

I say happy holidays to all my customers because I don't want to offend anyone but still want to say something!

I always say Merry Chrsitmas and if I know the other people are Jewish or celebrate some other holiday, I'll try to include theirs afterwards.

Nothing wrong with saying Merry or Happy anything anyway you can around the holidays.

I even tell my stepson... Happy Solstice and give a card with that on it, instead of Christmas wishes or cheer. He appreciates it and understands it's not my way, but likes the idea I acknowledge his.

The funny part is.... this is the time of year people celebrate so many forms of the holidays, but they'll all accept Chrsitmas presents without blinking an eye.

We have some Jewish friends who come over some time of the week and we sing Christmas songs and talk about how we celebrate the time and then they tell us what they do, but they seem to like ours better. They also like the sausage products and after eating them.... say oops, I didn't realize.............. but they do it year after year.
We know Stu and JoAnn for over 30 years and this just seems to slip their mind. :Big Laugh

Some other very old friends call it 'Three Kings Day' and really don't acknowledge it being Christmas because the way we do it is considered sacrilegious to them, but their kids know it as both ways and much prefer Christmas and Santie Claus. :omg:

I just say you too no matter which they say to me ... hate the stupid game everybody plays with that stuff. My mom is a die hard Merry Christmas person and gets almost offended if someone says Happy Holidays to her. Just defeats the whole point of the holidays in my mind to get upset over a greeting.

I am not going to dance around anyone else's PC BS.
Merry Christmas is whats important to ME, so thats what I say. If that offends anyone, then I probably don't want to associate with that person anyways (must be a whack job if something so trivial upsets you). Just imaging how upset they would be, if the color of their sign was a shade off. :Big Laugh

I don't think I would ever be offended if someone said Happy Hanuka to me. I'd be happy that I was important enough to them, that they shared with me.

On a side note.......
Got too much time on your hands today Eric? Geez, I'm getting sick of this same senseless debate every Christmas season. I never thought you would be the one to bring it up.

Most of my Jewish friends say Merry Christmas and both my muslim friends have Christmas lights on their houses. Some people choose to acknowledge December 25th as the celebration of the birth of Christ, some choose to acknowledge it as just a day set aside to give gifts to loved ones without attaching any religious meaning to it.

I think the vast majority of the population doesn't care what you say, they're just glad you took the time to say something. The only people complaining are the ones who go through life trying to figure out who is persecuting them next.

I say Happy Holidays because you don't want to offend someone. You know how weird people can be anymore.

I say Merry Christmas. I don't even think of it as a religious holiday because I'm not religious. It's more like "family day" to me and I don't think I'm alone on that one. I don't get how people get offended? Silly...

I've designed a few Christmas cards etc recently and most have changed Merry Christmas to Happy Holidays.

Well I get wished HH and MC daily lately in emails and since many of my customers are on this forum, I thought it was worth posting. And I brought it up because it seems like every year it becomes more of an issue.

When I was growing up there was never a discussion of being PC. Merry Christmas was wished to one another by everyone I knew... or maybe I grew up in a predominantly Merry Christmas family/school. IDK

Happy Holiday is OK with me if you are saying a general greeting to people you don't know as it is inclusive. it isn't about being PC or anything else, it just includes all inthe greeting. if it is to those you know, then address your greeting on what you know is what they celibrate and most will greet you back with what they know you celibrate. I think people make such a big deal over this every year. if you are one of those pushy "Merry Christmas, I don't care about you or what you celibrate", like you are taking some kind of stand, it seems like you really missed the whole Christmas thing yourself anyway. so Merry Christmas to all it applies to and Happy Hoilday to all of you it doesn't. I think saying it with real wishes for good is what really matters.

I say Happy Holidays--as in Merry Christmas and a Happy New Years. Although, I do sometimes say Merry Christmas.

I wouldn't get offended if someone wished me Happy Hanukkah or Kawaanza or Winter Solstice or whatever holiday that brings them and theirs together this time of year. More power to 'em.

People that get offended by others wishing them Happy Holidays (rather than Merry Christmas) are ridiculous.

Jewish business that I have been to have Christmas trees. The Indian owner of a restaurant that I go to wishes Merry Christmas to everyone. Same with most Arabic people.
Why are so many people cautious about this? No one who you think might be offended cares.
Wish me any nice greeting or salutation from your culture and I'm pleased that you included me.

We have two big banners up, one says Happy Holidays and the other its Merry Christmas. Every year an older lady comes in just to say that she is so glad that we have Merry Christmas up because that is what the season is.

FWIW, they only time we ever had a brick thrown through our window was when it had an American flag hanging in it. I really think that overall, most people are understanding of this time of year. You only think of the vocal ones who don't, and I feel they are the minority.

As I'm in the Festivus camp, Happy Holidays, but I don't really care what you say to me as long as it's not prosthelytizing and annoying.

Always has been and always will be Merry Christmas for me! It's on my FB page, it's in my Email footer to all my customers... everywhere. Hasn't offended anyone so far... even my Muslim friends where we dine frequently. They don't celebrate Christmas at home, but they do in their restaurant with their customers... good for them... :clapping:

There is some nut up here (I believe in Winnipeg) trying to get the Canadian government to ban "Merry Christmas" from every city. He is offended because the busses in Winnipeg have it displaying on their front signs. Boohoo for him!! I wish him luck (and a Merry Christmas too!!) :ROFLMAO:

Oh, and while I'm at it... Merry Christmas to ALL of my Signs 101 friends. I've been a little quiet on here this year, but I think 2013 will be a bit different now that I have a nice steady routine in place!! :Big Laugh
