Mimaki jv150 take up reel is moaning

Started about 3 months ago out of nowhere...the moment you latch a graphic on the take up reel and it gets some tension it starts moaning. I tinkered with it but the more force I put on the clutch the louder the noise....sort of sounds like a vibrator gone crazy. If I back off the tension the sound goes away but then the take up reel starts to start and stop continually. Any idea how to fix this?

Open the take up motor and check the gears if they are fixed properly or loose.

While you have the take-up motor open, look to see if it has some kind of clutch disc, probably leather. If this is the case, they may need to be replaced. After awhile, these start to lose their friction, causing slippage and requiring more force to work.
