Mimaki JV5 miss-registration

Hi guys

New member, first post! We are having serious issues with our Mimaki JV5 miss-registering. Only way to describe it properly is if we are printing crop marks (usually 0.5pt wide) the printer won't hit the same mark twice on any pass so crop mark can end up blurry and about 5mm wide. The problem can all but clear up only to start again further down the print. If we are printing small white text on a black background sometimes the text is hardly visable. We have recently installed an HP Designjet L2550 in the same room and running quite a lot of blueback posters which are generating a fair amount of steam and humidity which we think may be the problem as it started happening around the same time.

Any suggestions? (Except moving the machine as we have limited space)

Sounds like your encoder strip is either dirty or getting fogged up.

If it's getting fogged you can dry and run a de-humidifier in the room. If it's just dirty clean it. Don't use any harsh solvents though or you'll need a new one.

Thats what we thought as well, have tried cleaning encoder strip a few times but it seems to make no difference. When we clean the heads from the front panel display using a hard clean this can sometimes help but not always. It has been a few years since the encoder strip has been changed so boss is now considering this as an option.

The encoder strip never touches anything. Unless you've damaged it or it's getting foggy or ink covered there's no reason to replace it.

You may have some sort of humidity related issue that's affecting the electronics and causing a misfire. What kind of humidity levels are you getting in the print room?

Be careful if that's the case. It could damage all the printers in the room, including anything else electronic.
