can be direct (pc to printer) with a crossover cable.
can be separate (pc to switch to printer) using separate switches for each network(preferred over same switch)
can be different vLAN on same switch, if you have a vLAN capable switch (and some brains)
worst way is same switch with no vLAN (like a cheap dLink)... may as well use ONE ethernet adapter and put the printer on the same local LAN.
