Never go against the family
It's because the head drops ink while it's moving, having it too far away from the material causes overspray. The only time you should be running the head in the high position is when printing to thick material that would cause head strikes in the low position. If you are printing on media too thick for the low setting, and still get overspray, it can be reduced if you run the head at a lower speed.
On the 1204 you have 2 eccentric nuts to up and down the full carriage (those white bits with 3 white plastic strips on each one on the up/down axis on the carriage). If i dont remember bad, it should measure 1.2mm to 2mm from head to bed in low position (i think nfo and tool example is in the manual)
