Just a dumb question. I must have accidentaly deleted the my computer icon off the desktop. Where do you go to create a new shortcut?

i have my xp set for for classic and I cant see either of those in the start menu. How else can I get it back. I see if I drag the c drive to the desktop I can open that up then there is a tab for my computer in there but I cant seem to make it create a shortcut.

if you right click on the start button at the bottom left corner and then left click on explore you might find using that utility more useful then explorer and you dont have to close your active screens to get there

Here's another way to get it back in XP.

Open any folder and type Computer in the address bar.

Then drag the Computer icon from the address bar to your desktop.

Another alternative is to right-click in an open space on your desktop, go to properties. Inside the properties dialogue there is a 'Desktop' tab. Open it and click 'Customize Desktop...' there is a set of checkboxes on the top. Put a check in 'My Computer'

Viola.

tip to keep you from accessing that icon in future. Now that have the icon on your desktop, left click and drag to one of the screen edges to create a toolbar with drives. Now you have one click access to all your drives from the desktop.

One more trick to this situation, if you don't want the icon at all:

Hold the 'Windows' key (between ctrl and alt) and press 'E' will give you Windows Explorer.

Hold the 'Windows' key (between ctrl and alt) and press 'D' will minimize everything that's open and show your desktop.

Hold the 'Windows' key (between ctrl and alt) and press 'L' will lock your workstation until you provide credentials to log back on, but will not shut open programs.
