If u r talking super simple 4x4 ones - T-join them ( make a 2x4 notch in arm part & in post that goes in the ground. Screw it together, everything will be flash. Install it in the ground.
I used to do them with a router template, guide bushing and 1/2" bit in my plunge router. Now I have a radial arm saw and can dado the half lap.
Only thing with the router is you will have to do some math to make an accurate template. You need to compensate for the bushing offset. Big advantage to the router/template method is the ability to work anywhere you have 110V power.
Yep, half lap them. You can get dado blades for chop saws & table saws. You can route it or really go old school and use a circular saw and a chisel. Any of these methods will get you there, some faster than others.
