I have a friend of a friend that would like to cut out a name from a boulder that has his dad's named engraved into it, he would like to have just the name cut into a monument type of stone for a keepsake, as the man is dead. I told him to contact a monument co. Maybe they have a process to do so. Maybe a very large diamond blade (chainsaw) or water jet?

Never go against the family
Check with monument companies that make headstones, there are still some that cut their own down from large blanks. Granite quarries have equipment to cut some pretty large stuff, so if you have any around you, check with them too.
You'll probably have to transport it to them if you find one.

Dammit, make it faster!!
Cut a stencil from "sandblast" vinyl (think it's called resist), apply it then sandblast.

turn the boulder & cut with a concrete saw (“filet” the stone)

use the kind of saw they use when repairing waterlines under a road.

i would call united rentals if i were doing it in NJ. I have seen these saws 18”, 24” & 48”. 48” will cut 20” into a stone. Rotate the stone to complete the process.

Go Bills!
find a smaller rock and blast the name into it, roll the original boulder over so the name is covered up.

Being a grandpa is more fun than working
Engraving boulders and working with stone is what I do. I'd suggest using feathers and wedges to split the stone until the section is small enough to slice with a diamond blade.

Every stone behaves differently, so go carefully.
