I'm surprised at the amount of people that come on here asking the most basic of business questions. How do I price something? How do I get customers? I never from day one had that issue. My issue, like many here is.. How do I make such and such sign? What's the best method of doing blank? Oh and all the damn printer questions.

Maybe there is a business class you can take to see if you are a fit for starting your own business... If you don't know how to start getting customers or how to make money, maybe seek business advise.

It was literally just a question. I have seen so many people ask but only a simple question and all you people want to make more of it than what it should be. JUST A QUESTION. Not once did I say I myself was starting a company that I wanted to get a better understanding on how others have gained their business. But I guess I was asking on the wrong "professional" site
signs101 can be a toigh crowd, sometimes, BUT, that being said, you will get a bigger attitude from prospective clients. that attitude will not serve you well. a good salesman walks into a hostile room &'turns them around

Just wait a few years Tex, it is all based on a bell-shaped curve. You start out knowing nothing, you climb the ramp up to the peak - you know everything you are going to know - then start slipping and sliding down the backside to the 'knowing nothing' beginning/end state.

I ask myself these basic questions almost every day and soon you will too:
Where are the keys to the truck?
Is this the turn into my shop or the next one?
New guy, who has been here 5 years, what is your name again?
Did the customer ask for 10ft wide by 4ft high or 4 wide by 10 tall?
What were we talking about in this thread?

This site is named Signs101 which 101 means "basic knowledge". Why would anyone assume they can't ask the most basic questions here?
Anyone can ask anything. But why give attitude when The person answering them has a follow up question?

"How did you get your first client" is like asking "my neighbor wants a sign, what should I charge?"

There's a million different variables - what works for me is not going to work for you. It's not absurd for the people answering the question to assume the guy has a business and at least some knowledge.

Plus... This is "Signs101" not business 101. They somewhat overlap, but this forum isn't really geared towards babying people who want to start a business from scratch and have no idea how to do it... With zero research.

If you can't be independent enough to do a simple Google search and find the 500+ other times this has been asked... You'll never be able to handle running your own business.

Not all of us got into business by choice, and into the sign business, no less. In my case I was more or less forced into due to losing everything during the Covid mess and the opportunity came my way so I grabbed it. Though I had a background in printing & graphics, zero actual business experience and almost no knowledge of sign making. I was petrified when I first started. Probably half of my threads here are related to sales & business topics, seems like the best place to chat about stuff and ask questions.
