Newbie Question - sure it's simple

I am trying to cut a decal for my son's helmet. I just need the letters to overlap slightly but I don't want it to cut into the other letter. I stick to simple things for what I do and I can't for the life of me figure it out on AI. I just want to do the CH in maybe a Varsity font. I'm sure there's a simple answer and I HATED asking what is likely a stupid question. Thanks for your help!!

Can you weld it?
(I only know Corel)

I don't see/know how to "weld". I always use "Merge" in the pathfinder section.

Convert to objects,then expand

ROB, I think she had the C over the H. Maby it doesn't matter.??

When you weld it it doesn't matter which is on top.

You may have to put the stroke behind the object in the appearance box, and convert the outline to a stroke

Type>create outlines
Select the two letters
In the pathfinder choose "add to shape area" the first icon in the top row
Object>expand appearance
