My boys wanted to watch The Avengers cartoons on Netflix tonight. The Microsoft Silverlight player wouldn't load. Spent two hours trying to fix the problem, uninstalled, reinstalled, jiggled wires, googled, everything I could think of. Finally called Netflix, they walked me through some stuff, nothing worked. They connected me to Microsoft who walked me through some stuff. Nothing worked. The Microsoft tech wanted remote access to correct it. I asked him what he wanted to do, he said he needed to reinstall system fonts and utilities. I specifically asked him about the fonts and made sure he wasn't going to delete everything there. He assured me he wasn't. As a precaution, before he got access, I made a new folder and copied all the fonts to it.
I was watching tv while I'm halfway paying attention to what he's doing on the computer. He was going through my font folder and deleting the system fonts, he downloaded a zip file of the system fonts and was reinstalling them. Nothing exciting, looked okay to me.
Then I look back and he's deleting everything out of the folder! All my damn fonts, even after I specifically asked him about it. I asked him what he was doing, he told me he'd backed them up and had to reinstall them all.
He gets finished, Netflix is working. Yeah, that's great....where in the hell are my fonts. They're ******* gone. He reinstalled the Microsoft fonts and that was it. Asked him about my House Industries fonts, he kept telling me to write down the names and there were plenty of sites to get them from. He still had remote access....he sent me to www.dafont.com. Told him they were commercial fonts, not free crap, he sent me to another free font site....then another. Told him to find me a free copy of Snapper Script....THE MICROSOFT GUY, STILL ACCESSING MY COMPUTER, SENT ME TO A PIRATED SOFTWARE SITE then promptly hung up the phone and disconnected from the remote access. Let me say that again....MICROSOFT TECH SUPPORT CONNECTED ME TO A PIRATED SOFTWARE SITE.
I cussed a bit, opened up The Font Thing to reinstall the fonts from the backup folder I'd made.....THE FONTS ARE GONE AND REPLACED BY MICROSOFT CORE FONTS.
It's not the end of the world, I've got copies of everything scattered across three other computers, I just know the hell I'm in for every time I go to open a file and don't have the exact same copy of Helvetica or Times Roman, all my kerning and spacing and sizes will be screwed.
Oh, but it's all okay....my three year olds can watch The Avengers cartoons now.
I need several beers.
