OK, Computer Gurus how do I get my files??? Please help!

My trusty G5 died today. It hangs on startup and I cannot get it to boot as a Target disc. I have a couple of files I need to get off of it in the worst way. Did a recent backup but lost a file for a trailer wrap today as it died while I was prepping it. Any specialists out there have any ideas of what I can do to retrieve the files?

It is an Apple G5 Power PC. I have a pretty good idea that one of the processors went bad. I just need to get a couple of files and I will be on my way to the Apple store to purchase a new one. I got my 6 years out of it for which I am very grateful!

Try to boot it with a linux boot disc, if successful, you should be able to copy files off.

go out and buy a usb drive enclosure to put your old hard drive into and plug it into another mac and get the files off of it,...thats is to say if it wasn't your hard drive taking a dump that caused your mac to die in the first place,...then you are SOL so o speak,...you'll need to remove the drive to be sure as to what type of enclosure is needed but you can always put it back in once the mac is repaired. enclosures cost anywhere from $20 to $80 depending on where you buy them

This is the right idea here and works on any computer mac or pc.

round man's suggestion is good too. I have done that before with success.

I have always been lucky and have had a friend with a linux disc.
Here is a link to instructions for how to do it.

It may be easier to just get the hard drive enclosure though, they do come in handy.

Thanks everyone for the input. Going to pickup an enclosure tomorrow and give it a shot, don't have much to lose at this point, I guess I might end up with another portable hard drive out of the deal, which is cool!

Sounds like your hard drive went bad, you can purchase data recovery software & maybe recover your files, put you start up disk in & if you can boot off of it, the hard drive is the culprit, if you can't then you will need to put it in an enclosure to boot it & for heaven's sake start backing things up, get your hands on an intel Mac so you can use time machine, just plug in a drive & it backs up automatically.

Attach the hard drive to another computer and access it for your files. I think it's best to have an external hard drive for problems like these.

i have a G5 quad and an intel 8-core mac pro, both running time machine (it's not just for intel macs). time machine is not just a great backup solution, but also an incredible way to restore any file from any point in time in history.

putting your existing hard drive into an external enclosure will not only let you recover your files but will make a great time machine backup drive. this is assuming that it was your cpu and not the drive itself.

and that's all i got to say about that.

Well took it to my tech this morning and he was able to recover the files. He is setting up a drive with everything on it thanks god! Thank god I also did a major backup last week so 98% of files where good. Either way I think I am heading to the Apple store for a new rig and Time Machine. Thanks everyone for you help and suggestions!

Grab a copy of Disk Warrior. It's saved my bacon a couple of times when hard drives went iffy. Dead simple easy to use disk recovery software for the mac.
