(OKC) Mimaki/Inkjet Field Service Tech Looking For Possible Work

Smoke_Jaguar

Figured it's worth a shot, since as far as I know there are no Mimaki techs in the state. Not certified, but been working on Mimaki, Mutoh and Epson stuff for quite a while. Lots of experience with UV as well as general automation systems, PLC's and systems like that. Mostly been doing freelance work for friends and people they send my way on their printers as well as far too much phone support. Figured I might as well give it a shot and actually get paid for some of the effort.

Not interested in working on HP equipment, as it is horrible.

Where are you located?

A quick addition, since people are asking.
1) Not Interested in moving.
2) I am NOT going to sell people new printers. I am not a sales rep (nor do I wish to be) and I will happily point out the good, bad or ugly of a printer regardless of brand if people ask.

I have two Mutoh printers . . a Valuejet 1204 and a Valuejet 1638 . . . they both need work. The 1204 won’t fire up at all and the 1638 keeps giving me cartridge errors on the Magenta and the yellow cartridges. I’ve replace the cartridge readers with no change. And, on the 1204 I’ve replace the power supply with no luck. Would you be willing to travel to the Omaha, Nebraska area to work on them?
Let me know.

Not certified on any of the Mutoh printers, only had a bit of experience with some of the older Valuejet line and that was hacking firmware to bypass cartridge chips.

the 1204 is about 14 years old . . . I replaced the printhead and maintenance pump about 8 months ago. Everything was fine. About 2 months ago the printing got very strange with these hair like anomalies showing up in the prints. Then the machine would just stop and reset itself like the power was turned off and on. Eventually the power wouldn’t even come on. You can hear the relays all kicking in but nothing more. Green light comes on on the mainboard and then a red light. Put in a new power supply but it didn’t change anything. Thought about ordering a a new mainboard for it but I wanted to be sure it wasn’t something else because I obviously am just guessing.
The 1638 was working fine up until about 10 months ago when it started giving me error messages regarding the cartridges on the left side of the machine. I’ve replaced two of the card reader boards but nothing changes . . . I’ve even bought brand new mutoh ink cartridges but that also made no change. On both machines I don’t know shit . . . I’ve been looking for someone to come in a fix them both but no one seems to have a service tech for a mutoh.
That’s the back ground . . . Thanks for listening.

Yeah, finding a factory tech that will mess with anything over 8 years old is a feat in and of itself. Best bet might be finding a donor machine with bad heads and harvest boards from there. Probably way cheaper than getting new parts if you can find one cheap. That said, some art to the troubleshooting, replacing parts until things work is expensive and dodgy at best.

Have you ever encountered this. My test prints have always been near perfect. Then I started seeing washed out colors and did a new test print. Only about 1/2 the lines that should show printed. I did a few ultra cleaning cycles and got most back. My next print was 8' long. By the end the colors were getting washed out again. More cleaning cycles next print, the same result. I have a couple of outdated cartridges with pirate chips installed. Could that be the problem?

Caps and dampers, the 2 things that cause the most issues. That said, I have no idea what model of printer you're referring to.

A common problem with these older Mutohs was the main board memory. Especially on the 1204. The oldest 1204 still had removable memory. If that's the case on yours, try removing it, air dusting, and then reinstall it. That would fix the issue of not powering on a lot of the time.

I did pop it out and reinstalled it but it didn’t change anything . . . is there a history of them going bad? It’s not a daily issue with computer ram going bad but I’ve seen it numerous times. I’ll try cleaning it and reinstalling it. Thanks for the idea!!

The memory itself doesn't go bad usually. Just the dirty terminal. Usually if it isn't the memory, it's another component on the main board that has fried.
