Oracal 651 or 751

Hi there.
I have a customer that needs some lettering cut for their trucks. Standard DOT#'s and stuff like that.

I was wandering do I need to have that done with a cast Oracal 751 or intermediate 651 is good enough.
It will be only for a 2" lettering, so I do not think that the issue with shrinking will be a big deal when it comes to intermediate.
I have a small shop and this will be done in a color that I do not use as much and I would hate to have vinyl just sitting there. That is the main reason I do not want to spend extra to get 751. I was going to use it constantly, I would not have issues spending more money.

Thanks:signs101:

Thanks guys.

I believe that I will go with 651. I usually stock 751 but paying 2.5 times more for a roll that I will not use for a while is a no-go in my opinion.
I doubt that they will use the trucks more than 3-4 years anyhow. Buying them used.

I use 751 on all vehicles except a few trucking customers that trade trucks every 3 years.

One of the things that I learned early on is to never scrimp on material, it will come back and bite you in the end.

Some have said 651, but I would rather get something that I know will work (not saying 651 won't), so I go with 751.

Now if buying a whole roll of a goofy color is an issue, why don't you call Fellers, and get it by the Yard (Pacific Sign Supply does it as well). Buy just what you need, and pass the cost on to the customer. (A couple of extra bucks, rather than $50)...

651 is okay for signs. 751 and 951 are much better for vehicles. A sheet of substrate costs $70. A car, truck, boat, etc. costs much more. Why would you use anything less than cast? I've just come to the point were I realize the many benefits of using cast over calendered and now two of our suppliers, if not three offer it by the yard so I don't have to deal with as much left over product sitting around. And the profit margin should be the same either way, if not higher for a premium product like cast.

I've been in this trade coming up 30 years and have used 651 for the past 7 years.
I can be honest in saying it is one of the best intermediate vinyls and have used it on vehicles and signs with no problems.
I live in damp and cold area so this probably helps. I very rarely use a cast material only if the panel is complex curved or wrapped.
