Painting on a rubber race track material

Has anyone any experience painting simple geometric shapes on a rubber race track material? I believe the material is made of recycled tires (shredded) so it is very spongy and very nice to walk on but may be a challenge to paint on. It is jet black and circles the school field as a race course. The plan is to cut vinyl stencils, lay them down on this rubber material and spray paint it. As it will be walked on, it needs to be durable, pliable and of course water repellent. Any ideas?
