PayPal Scam

There appears there is a serious scam going on with PayPal. They are saying that there was a recent change of activity and put a limitation on the account where I can not transfer money to my bank account. They (the scammer) are trying to blackmail me into sending them a bunch of personal information including a photoID to lift this limitation. I can't see how this can be legit as I have had this PayPal account for over 20 years and never needed to produce this info. They also lied and claim that this is a government requirement. To prove this yesterday I created a new business account and I did not need to provide any of this documentation they claim they needed. So it appears you are just trying to scam me and phishing for information especially after not having a problem for 20 years. And trying to say there has been a change in recent activity is just another lie to try to get personal information. This obviously is not required.

I would advise anyone that has a PayPal account to make sure you don't have any money in it and cancel the account as quickly as possible before they allow this scam to take over your account, put limitations on it and then blackmail you for lots of personal information to lift the limitation. Some of this information they say they want is invoice I generate for my customers that pay by PayPal when if they were legit they would already have that information. They also want tracking numbers of what and to who I ship to. And claim I need to also provide receipt from my suppliers. Attached is the scam paper. Kind of scary what they are asking for. At this point I just want to cancel my account but they would not even let do that.

I this point I am not sure any phone numbers or contact information on the Paypal web are legit when I login. Anybody have this happen to them? Any suggestions on how to resolve this?

Do you see this message once you log in to PayPal? If so I'm guessing someone reported you for fraudulent activity and PayPal automatically flagged your account. I'm sure a call or email to PayPal will sort it all out.

I have been trying to do that for the last 3 days, but all they do is continue to blackmail me for personal information without giving me any legitimate reason for doing so. I can't believe PayPal has let there site be compromised like this. And no I didn't give them any personal information. Log into paypal.com yourself. Check activity, change your PW. .NEVER follow links from anything that you haven't setup paypal or any other platform.

Forward that email to spoof@paypal.com and they will investigate. Under no circumstances give anyone your personal inf. If you hover over the email address you get will see that it is not from PayPal. I get that kind of email quite often and just forward them to the address I gave you above. I have been with PayPal for over 10 years.

There's no way you called them. They don't have any customer service numbers in the USA anymore.
As said already, sounds like you were doing something in violation of their TOS and your account got locked. Porn, not sending products you got paid for... something. It seems more like you're venting and not telling the whole story to be quite honest.
Another thing is third party pay companies are required to 1099 now which would be a reason they need to confirm your identity.

I process CC payments through papal, I had to submit ID, SSN, EIN etc and phone interview. I think paypal can have legitimate reasons to ask for that info. Call paypal from a number on the real paypal website and see if that is actually them requesting the info

If you log in via PayPal's site and everything looks good with the site address (and maybe if you've changed your password once) then I'd say it's legit. PayPal is asking for a lot of info to make sure there's no money laundering going on etc. and from the screenshot there's probably a transaction they've flagged (automatically) as suspect, maybe a larger amount, strange behaviour our just simply a computer that doesn't like you. What do you see if you click on the last "Provide info on specific transaction activity"?

I've had to supply PayPal with photo ID and more info when we started accepting CC payments via PP and it took a few days and then it was sorted. Bit if you are unsure of course you can contact their customer service and ask further.

There are all sorts of new requirements, under the biden administration.
Obviously, there was a trigger event, since it isn't happening to everyone at the same time.
There will be a requirement for a 1099 for every transaction over $600

Ok maybe I was being overly cautious. The way I am reading it I would have to supply them with information on every transaction such as invoice, tracking numbers etc. Do you have to do that with every transaction?

Interesting topic. I hate paypal BUT if you buy on ebay its a must. I had a cc linked to paypal and a bank account, if I ever got any kind of substancial balance in paypal I would empty the account. I found out about 3 months ago my bank account was deleted with paypal and for the life of me I cannot link my account back up to them....all I wanna do is empty my account and then delete it BUT I always get an error. I google it and it seems a lot of other people are having same frustrations.

Overall as a buyer I like paypal for the protection but on the other side, I wouldn't be so keen on using it to sell stuff. They can make their decision on the claims however they see fit and keep your money in for 180 days if there's problems etc.

Bottom line Paypal is pretty close to a bank so they most likely have to follow strict rules. Asking for ID seems like the least sketchy stuff. And by the looks of that it just points to a one specific transaction having some issue/claim behind it. It might even the that the customer of yours is the sketchy party sending money in this.

Unlikely, seems something just flagged this one transaction. KYC is generally valid for 1-2 years as far as I recall.

Not really telling. eBay started their own in house payment processor, that's a pretty natural progression. You can still pay with Paypal on eBay too.

there's also a fedex / USPS scam going around that you have an undelivered package and need to confirm the address - they give you a fake conf. / shipping # and want you to follow a link . don't do it ! a friend did and they wanted money to " re deliver " his package , wanted CC info or bank info . looks legit but it's a SCAM
seems anything for a buck these days
