Ok. silly question. Does anyone use a simple program to pay their employees? I don't want gusto or anything like that. I basically want a spreadsheet with formulas so I can just take out taxes for my two employees. Anybody have anything simple?

Check out https://www.halfpricesoft.com/index.asp Very inexpensive compared to others that have the ability to create forms. I have been using it for a couple of years now it does everything I need. NOT ONLINE WEB BASED and is available for Mac OS and Windows.

Paying the employees is the easy part. In my state I am required to fill out quarterly and annual reports for unemployment payments made on behalf of each employee. Also there are payroll reports required by the IRS. If these are late or done incorrectly there will be penalties to pay and possibly a mountain of bookkeeping to get things sorted out. I use Quickbooks for payroll and reporting. It's expensive but it can save many hours of time.

this is the part i'm afraid of. I'm not so worried about my two employees. they are family. but the reports are what make me insecure.

Agree with you on the reports...I don't trust myself to keep up with the changes in payroll reporting to the IRS and/or other government entities. I have made mistakes in the past that caused me a lot of time and aggravation to correct so that's why I bite the bullet and subscribe to Quickbooks. There are other software programs that are probably cheaper to use and just as good, but QB works for me. I use it for multiple tasks for bookkeeping. I'm a numbers person so I like having control of the financials myself. I also have a good accountant for taxes and miscellaneous issues as they arise. My mistake is not charging for my time that I spend on bookkeeping. If I hired a bookkeeper that would be a cost of overhead that I would remember to cover!
