PIA but worth noting - Illy CMYK -> PMS convert

My share for the day shows how to convert a CMYK value in Ai to a PMS (or any other colour book) number.

A real PIA to do but I don't know of any other ways.

I recently had to use this (although I don't like to personally, as it might not be as reliable as one might hope depending on colour profiles and settings), but it at least gave me a good idea.

If you know another way of getting a pantone colour from CMYK in Illustrator, which is quicker/better, please post :)

Or... as Corel users will know, it's a lot easier to do in Draw... but yes, till now, I was unaware of how to do it in Illy.

Holy $@#$ Batman!

Using the above method I just realised something...

Instead of specifying the pantone book to limit the colours to for the conversion/match, you can load the Roland Colour Library!

DO YOU KNOW WHAT THIS MEANS!!!!!!!!

Don't forget to hit convert spot color on the file format tab in versa works as you use that there fancy chart in illy or else your colors will be useless.

Screw the convert spot colour thingy! (although yes, very important!), I'm talking being able to automate the conversion from PMS to Roland Colour Library from within Ai!

Sounds nice to have it choose the closest color which I can see being a time saver but IMO when it comes to color nothing is better than putting the PMS up to your color chart. How would this work when you are trying to match the same color on different media? It can't compensate for the difference in white point values which would require a different RVW # from the library. Cool feature none the less. Thanks for the tip.

I know, but it's got me thinking... I am quite sure I'll come up with a way to exploit this newly found feature... will post again
