I just hired a designer, and need to know what the best way to go about charging the customer for time with the designer. Any suggestions? What rate should i charge the customer? Its for a bunch of stuff like eddm flyers, cards, postcards, etc.

I've heard anything from as little as $25 an hour up to $300 an hour.

I think it all depends on how good your designer is. If someone can't do diddly, how can you charge a customer based on someone not all that good ??

We charge out by the hour at $145.00 an hour.... or purchase a block of time for $$XX amount of dollars.

No offense, but this hardly seems like a fair question. Not knowing if this person can design wraps, logos, paste up or even hand draw when needed for added touches vs. someone who can barely cut and paste things together and find them quickly on google. Is this person truly a good designer ?? That's the real question. According to what you pay him/her, will determine a starting point. If I had someone on the payroll at maybe $15 an hour, I highly doubt they're gonna be any good at designing much of anything. So, using someone to find things on the internet and slap crap together is worth maybe.... $35 an hour shop time.

$60/hr for our sign company and $100/hr for our sister company which is a high end marketing, advertising and branding company.

Both companies have trained and registered graphics designers on staff but it's a bit more than a "perceived value" kind of thing.
The advertising company offers very in-depth, one-on-one branding and marketing for ad campaigns and company image etc so the service costs more and therefore attracts clients that don't just want a quick type-logo for the aluminum sign on the front of their convenience store.

Here at the sign shop we'd have a hard time charging $100 just for the design of a business card (or even $50 for a half-hour of design) when the cards themselves are only $45 for 1000.

**Just a note that I'm in Ontario Canada, so my numbers may not necessarily work for your area or economy....you have to be competitive in your own area as well.

$60/hr minimum, but its up to you to determine actual design time allotted and value of said design.
Its easy to sit there and play all-day on layouts, but if the client isn't excited about paying $500 for a proof-sheet on a small project then you're just wasting time and money.

We usually budget $X for a sign design... and if the client is demanding of revision after revision, then we discuss/approve additional costs based on their request before moving forward.

Most around here are $75/hr. That being said...I just kinda guess what it'll cost to design it, and build it into my price. Normally people around here freak out and ask why they should have to pay for the design. I learned quickly they don't say boo if you just build it in. It's all about the billing.
