PPF Failure?

Quit buggin' me
Another strike for putting PPF under a wrap:

NASCAR's Senior VP of Competition Scott Miller has now revealed that extra strips of material were found under the decorative vinyl sponsor wraps of the vehicles that put them out of acceptable specifications.
"In our review of the post-race infractions on the 11 and 18 cars at Pocono it was discovered that a single piece of clear tape was positioned over each of the lower corners of the front fascia ahead of the left-front and right-front wheel openings on both those cars," Brown said.

"The added pieces were 2 inches wide and 5.5 inches long with a thickness of 0.012 inches and installed under the wrap. This change in our build process was not properly vetted within our organization and we recognize it is against NASCAR's rules. We apologize to everyone for this mistake, and we have made changes to our procedures to ensure that it does not happen again."

"Neither NASCAR nor Joe Gibbs Racing have detailed the potential effect the modification could have had on the speed of the vehicles.

Further evaluations will be completed at NASCAR's R&D facility in North Carolina, according to Fox Sports reporter, Bob Pockrass."

What affect could it have that'd give you an advantage or disadvantage in nascar? Seems kind of dumb to me... I get rules are rules, and disqualifying him sucks, but is fair... but do you really need to run tests at an R&D Facility to see what effects it has? haha...

Yup. You can't debate the rules just because you got caught breaking them. The time to do that is before.

Don't you guys know that each sticker adds 10 horse power? Obviously the Clear sticker underneath raised the graphics just enough to cause the wind to drag less, giving them an edge!

Imagine winning a race, then being told someone put a piece of tape on your vehicle so you're disqualified. It doesnt even say its PPF... just says a 2" x 5.5" Piece of tape...

Seems that they are regulated down to the smallest detail including air pressure in the tires both pre and post race to catch the cheaters. I try to imagine what it would be like if our voting system was even 1/10th as regulated....

Well, perhaps. I was making fun of the sport that originated from the need for faster cars, to outrun the law, to deliver illegal alcohol. I watch the history channel. Any way... It's just ironic that there are so many regulations, for it's background. Or not ironic at all... Depending on how you view it. There's big money behind it all... There in lies the regulations. To keep fair for the gambling sector of financial "support"

If each piece of tape adds 10HP, the tape holding my car together gives me a 10,000HP car.

Does that go for chewing gum, too ?? I wonder when hand lettering these things, if that had any advantages ?? Too much thinner in the paint, created not enough drag in the brush...... it could effect the performance.

Ppf is paint protection film.

Know those rubbery, laminate type screen guards? It's like that but thicker.

It's super expensive - think 5x the price of wrap vinyl... A pain to install, and tbh... Generally not worth it. I say that as a 3m installer....

It's super expensive... So people put them on their 80-120k cars. You know... The type of people who examine everything with a magnifying glass....

Now imagine using a clear film. White cars are the worst, we don't even do them anymore. Every spec of dust is seen from a mile away... Other colors you can't notice. Nothing beats ripping $200 of material off a vehicle because a tiny, tiny spec of dust.

Imagine wrapping a Lambo. That's how ppf feels... No matter how good of a job you do, there will be a redo. Need a super clean shop.

The one exception is fleet vehicles. They just want to be able to tear it off on a year or two and sell it with no rock chips.. we charge fleet customers half the price as dealerships because we know if there's a piece of dirt or hair underneath it they don't care

This is what the race team should have done - installed it on top of the wrap and ripped it off before the car was sent for post-race inspeciton. If they had been reading Signs101 they would have known 'under the wrap' was a bad idea.

I think it stands for Paint Protection Film....
and those regulations involve limiting drag.
they have computerized air flow tunnels for testing (as well as computer modeling)
minimizing drag is as effective as increasing horsepower.
