Prep this for vinyl or cut new?

I did not make this sign but I know it's only been up for less than a year...out of business, new business in now and I had planned to remove this vinyl and apply new - it's not vinyl, it's paint. They must've used a stencil becuase I can feel a slight edge around all the letters. The back is rusted and there were a couple rusty screws.

I'm wondering if it's quicker to just cut two new pieces vs. trying to clean this one up? Would I just sand the front and go over it with vinyl and then would I need to prep the paint with anything? Why wouldn't they use aluminum?

They don't look very big, so according to how it was installed, I'd use .063 aluminum or 3mm acm. Don't waste time on those panels. Too much trouble.

Well, I think it's glavanized and I'm pretty sure they used stencils, there's quite a bit of bleeding. Maybe even spray paint becuase one spot is multi colored...not a very good job when looking at it close up.

Pardon me if I'm wrong, but the idea behind galvanized is that it won't rust for like 50 years..... anyway 35 or so. Also, I don't think rattle cans come in some of those colors. I'd sooner think it was sprayed after having a frisket cut and applied to the sign surface and sprayed in layers with real paint. Doesn't look like any brushwork on there.

That could be...I was a little surprised to see it was painted and not vinyl but it's definately not brushed. Here are a few close ups just for the heck of it...you can see on the first one that it's sprayed since the burgandy is a little bit on the teal.

Well that's a weird way to make a sign (all around).

Possibly a soccer mom with a cricut tryna be a "signmaker".....??

Actually, it's not. When backspraying electric faces, you would put liquid frisket down, cut it out with an xacto, spray it and do all your first colors, then remove the next layer or cut some new for the incidentals. It was all done in reverse This would be first side, so it goes down naturally, background colors first and come towards the front. If you have the setup for it, it's a nice clean look and will/should last a long time, based upon what they used for paint.

New ACM! I'm assuming by quicker you mean cheaper, as doing anything other than using that panel would be quicker...
Doesn't look like galvanized, but I'm an aluminum guy. A single piece of aluminum is often more expensive than sheet metal, and sheet metal is more readily available.

Yes that looks hand cut. Could have been stippled on, but I doubt it. Most likely sprayed. I've made my own miniature spray bombs using good oil base paint for applications such as this. Makes for a very nice finish. In your pictures it looks as if they were sloppy and in a hurry to leave such a mess behind.

Have you tried upselling the new tenant on a distressed, authentic pantined panel?

Well...he ended up closing. Here's the long story if you are bored.

Or maybe I should say he got kicked out because he didn't pay his rent. He also had a bar in town and got kicked out of that as well. He owes all the distributors money and a lot of local businesses and a few of his employees. A few years back I posted on here about him not paying me. The bill was like $2k for apparel when he first opened his bar. Maybe it was Gino who told me to go sit in his bar until I got paid so I did. I refused to leave and I was a real B8tch. He said he would send me a check in the mail and I sat down and said, "Nope, I'm just sit here until you write me a check." It was when he first opened and everyone in town thought he was this great, popular guy. To me, he was an arrogent jerk who thought he didn't have to pay me. I mentioned it to a couple people and they acted like I was the one who was trouble! I was soooooooo PO'D!!!! Anyway, after that day, he paid me upfront or at pick-up every time and completely changed his tune with me. The last job for $75 I had to wait from August to December 27 to get paid. I was the only person who got paid. He owes one small business in town 5K and the distributors $25k+.

So, I might not be the most popular person in town but it turns out I might be the smartest in this case LOL

I did not, infact, they just stopped in and he grabbed the panels and said he was going try sanding them down nice for me. I said OK - if you want to try, I'm fine with that, and we will see where he ends up. He is retired and bored so he was excited to try. He's a real handy guy so I'm curious how he does.

So the moral of the story is to not hang around in seedy bars if you want to be small-town popular, but you might pick up a few dollars if you stay long enough?
