Preserving editing ability of font in PS

I've scoured the web to not avail. Pretty simple scenario really. Let's say I have two PSD files open and I want to drag a word that has been typed in one PSD file to the other PSD file while preserving the editing abilities of that font. When I do it, it automatically rasterizes the word, eliminating the ability to edit.
Anyone have an answer to that?

You would have to make the file/word into a smart object. Smart Objects retain editing capability. That's all I got on short notice and 2 whiskeys.

Just go to your layers palette, click on the arrow.. go to "duplicate layer." It will let you specify which file you want to duplicate the layer to or allows you to create a new file.

The only thing you need to be careful is the size of the file. If one is very large and the other file is small, the word can duplicate off the artboard and is a PITA to get back. If that's the case, simply crop around the word in the larger file... then duplicate the layer to your smaller file. Afterwards, go back to your larger photoshop file and step back in history to before you cropped.

RJ,

It didn't work in this case. I made the designated layer into a smart object and dragged over to the new document and it lost it's editing capabilities.

BigDawg, thanks for the info. I was wanting a simpler "drag and drop" but doesn't look like it's going to happen.

Thanks for the update. Figured drag and drop would work. I usually have two or more files open for odd situations. So it is a different workflow for me.

Okay, this is a new one on me. I'm on CS 5.5 and I just made a text layer and did the drag-and-drop on a different file. Text layer copied and is fully editable. So, I now have some questions concerning your problem. Are both your files saved with "Maximize Compatibility"? Is this font installed on your system? And, did you drag-and-drop or Option, drag-and-drop?

Are you using an older version of Photoshop? This is not the case in the newer versions. Dragging a text layer to another file leaves the layer completely editable.

Maybe I am missing something?
