There is a local independent lumber yard down the street from our shop, we always go there when we need to pick up some screws, lumber, small tools etc. They are not the cheapest, but they are close by and they guys working there seem to know what they are talking about.

today we got a call from their head office about pricing for yard signs, banners, vehicle graphics and a few other things, we gave them a price and his reply was "I can get it for half that price from a guy I know in Toronto" I asked hi. If the guy from Toronto shops in his store a few times a week like I do, he told me "price was the biggest factor" for him.

you better believe next time I go there, I'm going to be asking them to price match Home Depot on every item I buy!

Yep, sad but true, price beats loyalty most times!

I have the same deal here, local lumber yard runs about 30% higher then home Depot (which is actually closer to me). I like the vast selection that HD has and I get to select my lumber, the local guy doesn't allow you to select lumber, if you want four 4x4, he gives you the first four off the top, usually warped because they store their lumber outside with only a covered roof.

In HD, I can sort through the stack and pick me four straight 4x4's, yet it takes time, but I prefer QUALITY over QUANITY!

Bottom line, I don't do much business with the local guy, I LOVE me HD!!!

You know that sucks. You go there with no agenda and then he treats you like that. I would walk back up in there man. NO loyalty

Yep!

I get my 10% discount all the time, it's suppose to be ONLY for your personal use, so I mainly use it for TOOLS.

Lowe's has the same 10% discount MILITARY discount.

For years after I returned home from Vietnam, we would joke that being a veteran and 25 cents you could get a cup of coffee (and so could anyone else), it's nice that Home Depot and Lowe's recognize our service to the country and offer the discount.

Those who have not served in the military often think those of us who have, don't deserve any special treatment, and to some degree I understand, however it's nice when companies do give a discount, it's appreciated.

We have a few local restaurants who also give a 10% military discount, so of course I prefer to patronize their establishments, it's more about the gesture than the discount to me.

A few months ago we were in the same situation. Local hardware store that we frequent (at least 3 times a week!)

They have a huge facade so we wrote them up for a nice set of channel letters and a sign in the street.

The owner **** himself when he saw the estimate. Them he tells me we're a little over $1k over a competing shop.

I didn't hesitate to ask if they shopped with him, the answer of course no.

I also didn't hesitate to remind him that we buy bags and bags of quick set from him at $9 a bag, when it's $3.50 at home depot.

He handed over his credit card :)

On top of that the competing shop isn't insured and could have never pulled the permit.

I remember 30 years ago when these large corporations started talking over, each of them would offer better pricing and temporarily better service,

I personally hate going into Lowes or Home Depot now, at times you couldn't find a soul to help you if your life depended on it, and their selections

seem to be getting worse. In our area they have discontinued carrying composite lumber and decking and vinyl fencing... they also seem to carry

only the more expensive exterior screws

I miss the old mom and pop hardware stores :(
