Pretty wild, re-writable paper? No toner or Ink? What will they think of next?

Answer: ePaper and then Color ePaper :)

just did a conversion at xe.com as of 3/2/2010

500,000.00 JPY = $5,638.66 USD (Printer)
300 JPY = $3.38 USD (Paper each, sold in lots of 1,000)

are they out of their minds with this? how could this possibly be more economical even over a years time considering the cost of the printer?

plastic paper. that wont go over so well here in the green friendly US. as well it shouldnt.

this is old tech and cost prohibitive. in china where they recycle computers in dumps, im sure this is a-ok, but dont expect to see it on and US shelves anytime soon.

I was wondering what the conversion was, 3,380 bucks for a package of paper? WoW! Like everything, though, as time goes on, I am sure it will get cheaper.

Right. Anyone remember or still have a thermal fax? Where you can't read the fax after a couple of months sitting in a file? So this printer is good for ...what? Inter-office memos?
