sorry dumb question but...
what is the setting to change so the printhead in the versa camm only travels over the material are not the whole length of the printer?

Ooooo, nice setting. Is there any reason NOT to set this to sheet and let it do the full length of the machine?

Mainly for speed. The more the head travel the longer the print takes.

Interesting on the old CJ 500 the head only travels as far as the printed area of the print. If you have just a hair line on the left of the print it only goes to that spot until it needs to go further to print an image.

Is this not the same for the newer Roland units?

Our 540i came set on full scan. It certainly reads the roller position, but continues past the material right to the end of the machine.

The print head should travel the full length to allow consistent dry-time so you get consistent prints at any size.
Cutting that process out will save time but can affect the print quality if over saturated.

Plus, you may create an uneven wear situation on many components if you were only printing part of the full range for very extended times. Possibly your rip will print double rolls at the same time. It not only increases production, you'll get better mileage on the printer.

You will not have any issues with the Full Width Scan setting disabled... We set all our new machines to disable. The Max ink dries quickly compared to the older inks (which needed extra dry time)...and no issues for the printer's longevity.

Just make sure all the panels in queue are the same width if your running like this.

If for instance you are paneling something and 4 panels are 50" and the last one is 20" the heating time and dry is different and will cause the last to panels to misalign on install. Pretty much the last panel will print so fast it it will be shorter than the others.
