I have to do a duplicate design for a smaller trailer, should I open a new window with correct new dimensions? Or can I just resize the canvas and resize the files as needed? Also I noticed an asterick after the rgb 8...??

I usually open the file then select "Duplicate" from the "Images" menu. I then make the necessary changes to the new duplicated file and save it with a new name.

The asterisks (*) behind the file name lets you the file has not been saved since you've made changes to it.

The asterisk after RGB means that the document is tagged with a color profile other than your default color space in PS. That is probably why the color values changed when you dragged the file into a new document which was opened with your default profile. Sounds like a profile mismatch.

A pound sign after RGB would signal that the image in question has no color profile associated with it.

Often I have a significant amount of time invested in my PSD files, and want all layers, effects, filters ect. preserved in the re-sized file. I'm sure this seems obvious but considering your question; A word of warning... before making any changes... do a "Saved As" and re-name your file BEFORE making your changes. Otherwise you risk, saving over your original file. It's easy to forget and mistakenly hit "save" once you start resizing or modifying the file.

If you're a MAC user, time machine can be a life saver, but even if you do auto back-up every few hours... you're still a risk of losing all your work between back-ups.
