QR codes from a distance

The thread on QR codes was interesting and I just reread it, but didn't find the answer to my specific question. Just how far away can a code be read from....for instance could you have one on a billboard?

Absolutely. It just needs to be large enough for the capture device to be able to discern between the codes various shapes.

That means though, that at the average distance of a billboard to the viewer, the code may actually need to be the size of the actual billboard.

Edit:
Also, it may prove impractical in some areas, as some places have bylaws against mobile phone use while driving, which is when the majority of billboards are viewed.

I saw one on a billboard just recently. I think it's a matter of your phone's resolution and the amount of data you put into the QR code.

Check out this article http://www.qrstuff.com/blog/2011/01/18/what-size-should-a-qr-code-be

For a billboard I would encode just their website or if they have a long website URL use bit.ly or another URL shorterner to make it even smaller. The less data the fewer and bigger the dots can be drawn in the QR code space.
