Anybody know if there is a way to use quickbooks in multi user mode over the internet so sales guys can add information at home or anywhere.

Not sure but how about using something like LogMeIn so they can all remotely access the main computer from any other computer online???

2 easy options:

use logmein's hamachi or a faster vpn client to let them use the QB database on their own laptops (much slower than option 2)

set up a windows terminal server with qb installed and enough terminal services cals to support them- then, one qb install with much faster access to your salesguys. they can use terminal services on Windows, OSX or Linux to connect. server 2003 and cals are cheap, you can support 5 concurrent users comfortably on a dual core AMD/c2d and 2-4 GB ram.

Or, if your database is small enough (160 MB or so is the limit) you can use QuickBooks Online. Intuit also offers a great feature to let you access your database on your smart phone, but oddly, not for a multi-user environment.

Will it work if I set up a VPN? Or if I use netdrive?

I've tried using Quickbooks directly over a VPN, and it's not a pretty sight. Basically, QB is a kludged together POS that started with a Win 3.x 16-bit codebase that has only been added on to since and never actually rewritten. They've changed the database features in recent versions but the client still takes big chunks of data, does its operations, and sends the results back.

Use either a PC or virtual machine, running Remote Desktop over VPN or a solution like LogMeIn or VNC...

it'll work over a VPN, it'll just be incredibly slow. the RDP server is your best bet, and should be able to be accomplished for under 1k.

we used a VPN for a year, now I tunnel over ssh (using a linux server at my shop) to use my mac pro for quickbooks... MUCH faster.

Quickbooks has an SAS (Software as a service) option where you pay monthly and can access it from anywhere.

You might also look into Xero.com or Freshbooks.com (or both). They are web based accounting software as well.

We have been using Quickbooks online but it lacks all the features of the desktop version. We are now in the process of setting our accounting up with www.myvao.com which is a hosted Quickbooks Pro 2011 that you log into via the internet. It seems to work really well and the folks are really great to deal with. $15.00 per month per user (going to $20.00 per month in January).
