RANT: townfolk requiring sign permits

Sigh.
i have been providing permits for the like of these people for a number of years now. i have a template, i set it up, it gets the job done.
there is never a curveball and i really hate it when the y make changes to artwork that was painsakingly designed with marketing in mind....
i used to fume about it when i was younger, now i just chuckle.
however,
i just learned that i now need a "narrative description" with my permit form.
describing what? the description of the material is in there. the reason why this business is moving into an EXISTING space is in there.
the size? it's in there.
the shape?
it's in there.
the total square footage of the entire sign and window lettering?
it's in there.
The building frontage?
it's in there.
the full color mock up photograph with the old sign?
it's in there.
the superimposed NEW covering over the existing sign??
it's in there.
now they want a WHAT?
should i have Dr. Suess do this?

where is the permit they ask?
i handed it to you with great task!
but its not enough, you see!
we still need more, they decree!

Yeah I feel it, too.

Had a customer around Chrsitmas or so come in for a new sign in a community we do a lot of work in. Knew the criteria and all the things we had to do to make him legal within code. Got an e-mail, they wanted engineer drawings of the sign, the depth of the posts, wind load and what the old sign looked like. Well, the old tenant had moved out long ago and no one had any photos of it. Hmmm, I would think the authorities would've had that on file to have given him permission, but the part about engineer drawings just floored me. This is a 4'x 4' double sided 1/4" aluminum composite on two 4" x 4" posts. Total height of the sign was about 6-1/2' off ground level.

If paper pushers run out of paper to push, their jobs would be in jeopardy. Job security at the government level.

TWICE in the past month I've had clients calling me for "Sealed Engineer Drawings" that included wind-load.

Both signs are dibond panels screwed & glued directly to the facade of the buildings. We didn't install the first one, but it was going on a brick wall. We are installing the second one and the whole job is being held up because the town is a bunch of morons. If they don't approve it this week I'm going to suggest to my client that we just paint it directly to the facade.

Oh yeah, and the wind load on both of these signs in equal to the wind load on the building. Is that not obvious??
