RC Car Body Wrap

Done a couple of these for people, did this one for my truck the other day. Went for a wild, 80's, punk inspired look. Need to adjust some aspects to get some of the design to line up a little better between some panels in some places but overall I like it, was fun anyway.

IJ180C with 8518, printed on Roland vs540.

Sorry, not the best pics in the world though.

Did you do this in one piece or use templates? Also was it hard to hold the body (since they are pretty flimsey) while you installed?

Good Job

Yes, looks like fun, but...Do you get paid actual dollars to do this?
Cheers!

Yes, we get paid everyday to make these.

Most wrap vinyls won't hold up that long however.
They tend to lift and get beat up very easy.

Is there much of a market for these at your local track?

I think so, I have had a fair amount of interest in entire packages (body, pit board, radio wrap, and other accessories) with a matching graphic scheme. Lack of time prevents me from going after the market like I would like.

I know of a couple companies that specialize in the market that I think do pretty well with it, or at least they look like they are.

Templates, I use Oracal paint mask (the brown semi-transparent type, I am going blank on the product number) and draw out the separate panels with a marker and scan them and recreate the lines. Do a couple of test panels, make adjustments, then do the layout print and stick. Determining on the body it can take a bit to get the panels correct but it isn't too bad.

When I can I stick the graphics before trimming the body out, it helps with the flimsy.

Agreed, you can make money, the way to do it is make some base layouts and give people color options. Doing full custom for everybody can get time intensive, some will pay for custom some just want "near custom".

I question doing it on short course truck bodies because like you said they just get banged up on a full fendered body. They do tend to help hold the body together longer though so maybe a little give and take there. They also tend to make a short course truck body heavy, it is a lot of vinyl and I suspect nearly doubles the weight of the body, one could argue it affects center of gravity. I think it is much more viable on buggies since they have the tires and wing that takes the majority of the beating and the extra weight is closer to the chassis.

You can do stuff though that is impossible or at least really hard to do in paint for people and you can replicate it on everything they have, it makes the product attractive especially to the more serious racers.

How much do you get for something like that?
I know my tmaxx, emaxx and rock crawlers get really beat up

Really just getting started but determining on what it is about $50 give or take. Now while I am getting a library of bodies and graphic elements built up I am taking a beating time wise but I am trying to keep it competitive with others and once that library is together I can turn them around much quicker.

Templates are VERY time consuming and with new bodies being made all the time.
It's never ending.

$50 would be on the low end.
