Re-Design Fees?

I'm wondering how people deal with picky customers who have you change or redesign a logo or sign over and over again. Do you explain in the beginning that the cost of the job includes only a certain number of re-designs, and that you'll have to add an extra fee per design change?

yes. people will keep on revising if they think it is for free.

I usually figure in 2 or 3 revisions on the original price. After that it's an hourly thing. AMAZINGLY, people decide really quickly after that.

If you're in the middle of a revision nightmare, let the customer know that your original price included x amount of revisions and you've already given then a couple of free ones. From here on, it will be X per hour.

How many you guys usually include with a original price when you get "I'm not going to pay for something i might not like" lol

Well, That's what meetings are for to get a feel on what you need so i can design from there but they don't listen

Case by case basis...usually most customers aren't like that. But if it seems to me like they are disorganized and want to keep sending multiple ideas for little tweaks or changes, I'll contact them and explain that each change takes time to make each change and generate a new proof. So, it would be in their own best interest to really take a good long look and request all changes in one or two detailed requests if possible. Otherwise it will start adding to the amount of their project.

This usually does the trick.

Design should always be hourly, with a minimum (often rolled into the initial price) depending on what it is. This is why: http://theoatmeal.com/comics/design_hell

Don't be a mouse cursor.

Also a good designer knows how to communicate the reasoning behind their designs, defending your design is half the job.

All re-design terms are listed in my proof agreement contract. It lists out how many redesigns are provided with the proof package, how much it costs for re-designs after the provided amount of redesigns and usage rights for proofs amongst other terms.

To counter the whole "I don't know if I want to pay for your services if I know there is a chance I don't like your work" issue ... you as a designer should have a portfolio of work you have done to show customers as well as be able to pencil rough out a quick sketch or 3 when you do the whole q&a for what they are looking for ... if they don't want to pay you for proofs by that point ... they can go else where ... they will know by that time whether or not you are going to be a little competent ... also why I charge for proofs.

That's also a good time to gently explain to them that your job as a designer is to do their brand justice, not necessarily make something they are in love with. In a perfect world you can accomplish both but as a designer your primary job should be to sell the brand, not to sell the logo to the client. Unfortunately it often comes down to the later instead of the former, especially in the sign industry where so many clients want cheap one-offs and have no concept of marketing or branding (local-only small business clients tend to be like this).

We have our designs separated into several price ranges. ie: minimum, medium, high end.

Minimum is 1 unique concept and 2 revisions. Every revision after that is X amount.
Medium is 1-2 unique concepts and 4 revisions. Every revision after that is X amount.
High end is 1-5 unique concepts and 4 revisions. Every revision after that is X amount.
