News Reece Supply charging for deliveries

Found out that over the Thanksgiving Holiday Reece Supply is not charging a $25 delivery fee on all orders under $259

Their website doesn't add on this cost until AFTER you have placed and paid for the order.
Called them up and was told it was done company-wide without a notification and all orders done online will not alert you to this new fee.

This is so normal in our area, I started doing it, too. They've been charging for deliveries at least 10 years around here. I think Harbor is the only one who doesn't do it.

Charge maybe, but don't mention the additional charge anywhere?

Oh no, I line itemize it. Don't want anyone asking questions. I have about 8 different line items for added charges. They're under their own heading and I charge how I see fit.

All our local suppliers charge for delivery for orders under $175. It's pretty reasonable. I usually just add printer ink or something to meet the minimum.

You guys are lucky.... Grimco is 15 minutes from our shop, and we get a $30 shipping fee and sometimes a $25 small order fee added on if our order is under 1K.... I think the small order fee is under $200.

Free shipping at $100? sign me up! We used to be at $500 as it was negotiated... but they took it away from us. Decided to calculate it just to see...Not including equipment purchases.... this year we did $158,000 just in material / ink purchases with grimco since January. No special pricing (Granted in Canada their pricing is really cheap, we dont play the suck up to sales rep thing) And we cant even get free shipping under $1000.... :roflmao:

But I get it, if I buy a $110 thing of ink... by the time they pick it, pack it, deliver it to me, They're in the hole. Charging for shipping under xx dollars is common so long as its an upfront charge...adding it on at the end is BS.

I don't state it upfront. It doesn't even appear in our quote.

How many of you when you get your electric bill, gas bill, doctor bills and a slew of other invoices see small charges for things never mentioned upfront ?? It seems to be a thing of doing business these days. Is it slimy ?? I guess so, but its a way of getting more money for things you can't get otherwise.

I mean we don't usually have delivery on our quotes either. But do you run the payment for the invoice without proper approval of the full amount including extra fees etc?

I think the issue here is placing an online order, seeing and authorizing a total/summary of charges, then the vendor running a payment for a different amount.

I dunno about in the US but I'm pretty sure that would be illegal here in Canada. Unless there is a clause stating that you agree to pay further charges/fees etc, then I guess it's fair game.

Normally there is some kind of verbage like "I agree to the terms and conditions and agree to pay XX amount blah blah blah".
**They may have this surprise delivery charge buried in their terms & conditions which may make it less illegal, but still 100% slimy.

It's illegal here too. All card transactions have to have an explicit approval from the card holder to charge the card. While I agree that this is probably due to the policy changing and the web team not being on the same page, they should probably refund the charge and not charge anyone else until the fee is added to the order processing page on the site. This would be easily charged back as well.

When you buy tires for your trucks or other vehicles, do you see all the hidden costs like balancing fees, certain taxes, disposal of old tires, delivery and other costs right upfront..... or do you see it once the invoice is given to you ?? Then you go to the guy and say..... what's this for ?? What's that for ?? They explain and you pay.

When the customer reviews the invoice, they see all costs, including items we discussed, after thought portions and the other costs added on at the end.

What happens if a customer brings in a filthy truck ?? Do you charge to clean it ?? If you don't you should cause cleaning isn't part of the quote, unless you're wrapping, then it's spelled out up front.

So, some woman comes in and wants her lunch buggy lettered in a particular font, you thought you had, but don't have afterall. Do you buy it and not get reimbursed for it ??

Once Grimco bought Tubelite all the reasons we loved Tubelite disappeared. I now drive an hour each way to our local plastics house and get 99% of our substrate there. Heck, what Nazdar just did to a cartridge order for shipping is ridiculous. Sign of the times I guess. Didn't think I'd be the old grumpy I remember back in the day guy this quick but here I am, lol.
