Release selection on bitmaps?

Whenever I make a selection on a bitmap- the selection comes back every
time I touch it- is there a way to release it... forever? Fpro 7.6 BTW

I just use the Rectangular Selection tool on the Bitmap Edit tool bar, but instead of drawing a selection I just click once on the image and the selection goes away.
