removing gold leaf

Hi,
Can anyone recommend the safest way to remove traditional gold leaf letters from a vehicle. These are hand gilded with painted outline and clear topcoat.

Is Oven cleaner the way to go?

1st use Boi-Ami ... then use sandpaper about 400 - 600 grit .. sand off and also use Boi-Ami when most is off...then Easy off oven cleaner which in the sun works faster 10 to 20 mins you must watch it will melt paint off a coat at a time may need to repeat steps ..neutralize by washing with water after each try of Easy Off also use plastic scrubby.

Care must be taken cause both steps will take to much off but it does work well and used alot.. also you may want it detailed after, to remove ghosts

Yikes! Never ever use Easy Off in the sun.
There was just recently a long topic on this same subject, perhaps try a search.
Lots of good info on it.
